Finding the Best Dog Food for Golden Retrievers in India

With some experience and a lot of research, we choose Angel’s dog supplies online regularly from Amazon India. Our list is not exhaustive. Also, remember that each dog is unique and requires careful consideration before selecting what may be the best food.

We have always avoided friendly advice and recommendations from others including pet parents, and through discussions in pet forums. Proper research has included extensive scanning of various authoritative sites as our main source of knowledge. In addition, however, we also advise you to consult your vet if in doubt and check the suitability of the product for your dog breed, size, age, and needs.

Do note that buying bigger bags of dog food works cheaper compared to multiple smaller ones. Hence some websites that mention per kg rates maybe a bit misleading when you are buying smaller quantities.

But if you want to delve straight into the names, here’s the table below. However, we recommend you to read the article to understand why we chose what we chose.

Buying Dog Food Online in India

For most of our pet supplies especially dog food, we rely on online shopping as it offers the convenience of free home delivery and discounts that a visit to the local pet store may not offer you. Online shopping for pet food is especially convenient because you can avoid carrying heavy bags of dog food of 10 kg or even 20 kg bags.

Other than Amazon and Flipkart, some of the reputable on online pet stores in India include dogspot.in, justdogsstore.com, headsupfortails.com, petsutra.com, pupkart.com, marshallspetzone.com, petshopindia.com, etc.

What is the best dog food brand available in India is everybody’s concern. We all want nothing but the best for our pets, and hence are particularly concerned about what dog food we give our pooches. We too have been consistent and selective on the diet we choose for Angel.

Royal Canin Golden Retriever Adult dog food 20 Kg and Farmina Natural and Delicious Medium and Maxi dog food are the two brands we choose regularly for their popular and quality reputation. N&D is available in grain-free as well as low-grain varieties. No-grain dog food is more expensive but has a high content source of protein.

It would be incomplete if we do not mention Pedigree Adult Complete Nutrition as one of the most popular brands of dog food available in India. Pedigree as a brand has become a generic name for any and all dog foods available in India.

Pedigree Dog Food in India has become a sort of cult food for dogs. Its name is genericized for kibble and is akin to what Xerox is to photocopy and Maggi to noodles in India! RoyalCanin comes a close second.

Pedigree is also the cheapest in the market and also the best-selling dog food in India. However, going by various food reviews across the web, we feel that Pedigree dog food quality is below average compared to the other most popular brand that is Royal Canin Golden Retriever Puppy and Adult.

We assume this is because of the fact that Pedigree dog food 20kg price in India is amongst the cheapest available brands. (As mentioned above, bigger the bag, lesser is the per kg cost. No other brand is available in 20 kg bags!) That being said, however, we have little to no experience with Pedigree.

You may, however, still be looking for a budget option; and if you still insist, we recommend that you go for Pedigree PRO which is positioned as being better than the regular variant. Pedigree has Golden Retriever, Labrador, and German Shepard “pictures” on its bags indicating its usage for large breeds.

Some of the other popular dog food brands in India include Grain-Free Goodness, Taste of Wild, Acana, Hill’s Science Adult Dog Food, which are premium brands and cheaper ones include Meat Up, Drools Focus, Purina, etc.

Grain-Free vs Low-Grain vs Regular Dry Dog Food

It is said that dogs have evolved from wolves and have digestive systems more suited for a carnivorous diet because they were supposedly wild animals. Over the thousands of years, domestication has resulted in dogs adapting to most human foods including carbs.

However, some people are of the opinion that in spite of this, since dogs are originally carnivores, we must feed them mostly carb-free diets. Hence, No-Grain or commonly called Grain-Free dog food recipes were developed. These contain high quantities of protein mixed with high-fiber vegetables or fruits. Supposedly this category of dog food is the best quality of dry food (kibble) available in the market.

If you want nothing but the best for your beloved pooch, you must try some of the brands offering grain-free recipes. Few brands of grain-free kibble available in India are Natural and Delicious, Grain-Free Goodness, Grain Zero, Taste of Wild, Orijen, etc.

Is Grain-Free good for dogs?

For the most part, yes. Being genetically from a carnivorous family, you may say that a carb-free diet may be ideal. It is, however, established fact now that high protein content dog foods may cause problems like renal failure (kidney problem) and cardiomyopathy (heart problem) at an older age. Hence, ideally, a low-grain formula or a recipe with lesser protein content with high-quality ingredients would be what you should be looking for in the best dog food.

For your reference, we have listed below a few golden retriever dog food brands that we have personally bought and used for Angel – our golden retriever – on a regular basis. We have found these products to be of reasonable quality and repute and would recommend it to any dog owner who has a golden retriever in India. Being pet parents ourselves, we understand how you feel about choosing the right product for your pooch.

Readymade (Kibble) vs Homemade Dog Food

A lot of households prefer to give homemade food for dogs in India. Indian home cooked food is primarily vegetarian for the most part even with those who are non-veg. We should bear in mind that dogs being ancestrally carnivores, need proteins as their primary source of nutrition. This practice may not be suitable for pure breeds and non-native breeds of India.

It is not appropriate to compare the common Indian mutt to nonnative breeds like Golden Retrievers, Labradors, German Shepards, etc. While the Indian mongrels over 100s of years have adapted to home-cooked food and even food in the garbage, they have developed the genetic survival strength through this diet.

However, purebreds cannot tolerate homemade foods especially if it consists primarily of carbs. While you may not see immediate effects, the overall life and the life quality of the dog is drastically affected.

That’s not all, there are various other reasons like convenience, well-balanced, breed specific formulas available in market that are well-researched recipes.

Golden Retriever Dog Food FAQs Pet Parents ask in India

What should I look for in a Golden Retriever Dog Food?

Other than the high-quality proteins mentioned above, we have one more aspect to consider – additional supplements to maintain the soft, glowing, and lustrous hair of a golden retriever. Look for Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids and L-carnitine amino acids along with vitamin B supplements.

Can golden retrievers eat human food?

Of course, they can. But be careful about what you feed. Stick to bland and boiled food only. Avoid spicy, salt, and sugars. But it’s recommended that high-quality dog food should form the major source of dietary nutrition, rather than home-cooked human food. Read 10 reasons why here.

How much is golden retriever food cost in India?

Some of the best dog food for Golden Retrievers have a price range between Rs. 7000 to Rs 12,000 per 12 kg bag. However, cheaper brands often cost less than Rs. 2500 but are of questionable quality.

What Foods should Golden Retrievers avoid?

Not all human foods are safe for dogs. There are certain foods that are toxic and cause an upset stomach for dogs. Eg. Chocolate, citrus fruits/foods, etc. Read my article about a list of toxic food for dogs that you should avoid.

Can I give Vegetables to my dog?

Absolutely. A lot of Goldens love raw vegetables and fruits. Angel, our golden retriever, will eat most of them happily. You may want to boil sweet potatoes, pumpkin, potatoes, however. Avoid citrus as mentioned above. Bananas, papaya, apples, cabbage, carrots, cucumbers, broccoli, spinach – anything goes!

Why is my golden retriever vomiting food?

Often time dogs’ vomit contains only undigested food and the dog acts and seems to be normal. This could be due to mild indigestion, eating too fast, or even too much exercise after eating. If the dog seems normal and vomits only once or twice and the vomitus contains only food, there is no need to worry.

Seek immediate vet attention in case the dog is acting anything other than normal, if the vomitus contains anything else other than food, is retching or having abdominal heaving. Read more about when to call the vet if your dog is vomiting.

How many times should I give food to my golden retriever per day?

Like all other large dogs, golden retrievers need to eat large meals no more than two times per day with a small snack in between. However, as puppies, you can divide the daily diet into four portions for morning, afternoon, evening, and night. Remember goldens are foodies and will seem perpetually hungry – that doesn’t mean they “need” food!

What food should I give to my Golden Retriever to gain weight?

Try high protein dog food brands like Orijen, Acana, Arden Grange, etc. Make sure you switch to foods with lesser nutritional value for the long term.

Can dogs eat eggs every day?

Eggs have very high protein value and are absolutely great for dogs. Make sure you remove the yellow and feed only the whites. It is important to note that the yolk should be removed in dogs with pancreatitis. Raw eggs may be dangerous as it may contain salmonella bacteria.

Can puppies eat adult dog food?

The growth rate of dog puppies is extremely high, especially in large dog breeds. They grow to their 90% adult size within a year to 1.5 years. This demands extremely high nutritional value food with additional supplements to support the growth of brain, muscle mass, and bones. This is not needed and hence is not included in adult dog foods by design. Therefore, it is not recommended for puppies.

How much food should I give my golden retriever?

There is no hard and fast rule about how much food you should be giving your pooch. The quantity depends on various factors like the dog food brand, the breed, the age, and most importantly the activity levels of the dog.

Generally, you do get the measurement guide for quantities on every dog food bag by all the brands. However, it is better you err on the lower side and feed a lesser than stated.

How much food should I give dog?

This is a sub-question to the above for better clarity and warrants elaboration as it applies to all dog breeds. The “quantity” of food will need to be adjusted also based on the age. As the dog ages, it becomes less active and the metabolic rate decreases. You need to reduce the quantities. Dogs gain weight by the time they are 4 years and above, if you don’t reduce the portions. Another important fact is that if you have neutered or spayed the dog, it is imperative that you give less food right from the beginning, and spayed dogs tend to put on more weight than non-spayed dogs.

How to transition Dog Food

Are you planning on switching your dog food for something better? Sure you must, but dogs do not tolerate a sudden change in diet and dog food brand. Often this leads to pet parents writing off the Brand as “not good” for their dog.

You might be missing a vital step here – you must change your dog food gradually over a period of at least 7 days – gradually introducing and increasing the new dog food brand ratio with your old dog food.

This will allow your pooch to have enough time to adjust to the new food and will tolerate the new brand very well. Most dog food brands will have this transition methodology mentioned on their packets as well along with the food chart. Do follow the same carefully.

Conclusion

It goes without saying that a healthy dog is a happy dog. We all want to give the best to our dear pooch. What we need to figure out is what works best for our dog. Spending some time researching what’s right is a must. We must rely on authoritative resources for this and make carefully informed decisions. Happy Pet Parenting!
