Today, I am going to tell you the story of how I got my first pet Golden Retriever, Angel.
I had always wanted a dog from the time I was a kid. But we couldn’t get one because at that time there was no one to look after it at home. I was always at school and my parents used to work. My grandparents stayed at home but they weren’t very comfortable around dogs and they didn’t want to take the responsibility of taking care of a pet.
But then… my parents started working from home! So the idea of getting a pet opened up a little.
The story of how I got my first pet dog is one of my favorite memories and one of the best days of my life and that’s why I wanted to share it with you.
My dad always wanted to have an aquarium and have lots of fishes to take care of but I on the other hand wanted a dog. Because you can’t play with fishes! They take a whole lot of maintenance and after all that the only thing you can do is sit and stare at them! But dogs are so much more interactive. You can take them along everywhere you go, you can have so much fun playing with them, you can train them and teach them tricks! And they turn out to be your best friend. Fishes…are just boring. That was my argument. Cats are nice too but you can’t train them or take them on walks. They just be sleeping all day long. Dogs are more interactive. I didn’t have siblings to play with either. And that’s why I wanted a pet dog.
I kept asking my parents if we could adopt a dog but they kept brushing it off. But I didn’t know that secretly my dad was researching and learning about how to take care of a puppy. He knew that taking care of a puppy wasn’t an easy thing to do and it takes a lot of hard work. It’s almost as if you are bringing home another kid. I knew nothing about dogs either. I just liked to be around them and to play with them. Even my parents knew that in the end they are going to be the ones to take care of it because I was still a kid and I didn’t know how to take care of it and even if I did I would be at school all the time so wouldn’t be able to.
I knew that they idea of a pet had opened up when we went to a pet supply store which was recommended by a friend to look for a breeder. The owner of the shop had a lot of contacts with good and reliable breeders so we went to ask him if there were any pups available for adoption. He said that there were 4 Golden Retriever puppies available at the moment…but they would be given away soon because if the breeders keep them for too long, they would have to bear the cost of vaccination of the pup which they didn’t want to do.
So if we wanted those puppies then we should adopt them as soon as possible. But unfortunately, my final exams were going on during that time so my parents didn’t want me to be distracted by a puppy. We tried to ask the breeder to keep one puppy for a few more days so that we could take it home after my exams, when my summer vacations started. But he said that he would be giving away the pups in first come first serve basis and that he couldn’t reserve any puppy just for us.
Then we came back home and I was sad because I had seen the picture of the puppies and I loved them so much and I really wanted them. I thought we wouldn’t be getting those pups because they would all be gone until my exams got over.
If you are wondering how to choose the perfect puppy, here is your answer!
But then, one day in 2015, when I came back from school, my parents weren’t at home. When I asked my grandparents where they were, they said they had gone out. They usually didn’t go out without me so I was confused as to where they went. I called them through the telephone and they said that they have gone out for some work and that they would be back home soon. I was convinced and I went inside to freshen up. After a few minutes, I got a call from my parents and guess what they said!
They said we r bringing home a puppyyy! My joy was unmeasurable. I got so happy that I started jumping on the sofa. That was one of the happiest day of my life. It took some time for Angel to get adjusted to our home but now she is loved and living her best life! 😀
